Colorful, Ethical, Solidary. Three words that are not accessories.
In West Africa, there are symbols evocative of traditional wisdom and moments of personal life; these ideograms are called Adinkra. Among them, one that fits our company the most is the one of support.
In 2017, Adeenkra created the program #CarryEducation to support projects of access to education in Africa. Within the first year, each purchase allowed a child to be fully equipped to go to school in Côte d'Ivoire. Education is, as Nelson Mandela said, «the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world» - it remains at the heart of our project and being able to contribute to the cause is an everyday motivation and inspiration to create more.
Strong and colorful fabrics that maintain jobs for the long run: a win-win situation.
Kids getting education is one thing, developing adult jobs is another. For us, the opportunity to help our community grow came by pushing Africa's pride fabrics.
In particular Côte d'Ivoire is the world's largest producer of cocoa and the industry provides more than 6 million jobs. From the very first Adeenkra backpack that was cut out of a cocoa bean bag, all of our accessories use that same jute fabric - a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. The country is also known to be a major manufacturor for Wax, commonly known as Pagne in French, a fabric made of colors and meaningful patterns.
Created by "Third Culture Kids"
Adeenkra is an ambitious project founded by French-Portuguese and Cape Verdean interior architect Nikita De Oliveira and Franco-Ivorian entrepreneur Sacha N'Guetta. After years in Europe, they came back to Côte d'Ivoire to combine their multi-cultural roots and become agents of change in Africa.
Now lead by young designers from Côte d'Ivoire, Adeenkra creates new collections of sunny accessories while nurturing the same ethical culture. Our brand aims at re-introducing Africa to the world as a rich, high potential, technological continent and becoming a gateway to unexplored design, fashion and culture.
